Ghana is located on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea only a few degrees north of the Equator. The
Republic of Ghana is named after the medieval Ghana Empire of West Africa. The actual name of
the Empire was Wagadugu. Ghana was the title of the kings who ruled the kingdom. Before March
1957, Ghana was called the Gold Coast, a crown colony estabisled by the British.
Ghana borders Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo
to the east and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
Gold, timber, cocoa, diamond, bauxite and manganese are major sources of foreign exchange. Oil
exploration is ongoing and the amount of oil continues to increase. The new currency is the
Ghana Cedi (GH¢).
